Scott Tucker: Deadlines and Needles

Before Scott Tucker was a photojournalism lecturer at San Francisco State University he was a student, and just like other student journalists, he has had his fair share of dangerous encounters and close calls while in the field.

As an undergraduate Scott Tucker was doing an assignment for a photojournalism III course when he faced a life threatening experience.

It happened one evening when he was documenting now 55-year-old Father River Sims, an ex-prostitute turned Evangelical priest, who was dedicating himself  that night in conducting a needle exchange for drug users in San Francisco’s Polk District.

Scott knew that some level of danger was going to be involved in photographing the needle exchange, but he had no idea that when he took a step back to get a wide-shot, an addict would threaten him with a used needle…
