This is Peter Erikson reporting from San Francisco State University. I spoke recently with Gator Sports Information Director Joe Danahey, who recalls one key moment that altered his life. After graduating from Rockford College in Illinois, Danahey came back home to Algonquin, a suburb of Chicago. Then came the shocker: His mother and father announced they were moving into a retirement home where everyone had to be 55 or over. “I said, ‘What the heck am I going to do now?’ ” recounts Danahey, 41, who earned a BA degree in child development. “But it was the best thing that ever happened to me.” Danahey quickly got a job as assistant sports information director at St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Ind., and took over the top spot a year later when his mentor was fired. The Internet was becoming big in college sports and Danahey flourished. He came to San Francisco State eight years ago. Listen to the interview to find out the rest of the story.
